Richard is one of Britain's most experienced fencers, having competed at both the 2004 Athens Games and at Beijing in 2008. Two years later, Richard agan proved his worth on the international stage, winning silver at the European Fencing Championships.

In 2009 Richard had one of his most successful seasons to date, winning gold at the World Cup event in Copenhagen and a silver medal in Paris before going on to take  silver at the European Fencing Championships held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Richard finished the season ranked fifth in the world.

2011 has also proved to be an excellent year for Richard as he took the silver medal in the men's foil at the World Cup event in Seoul, South Korea and was part of the the British squad that won gold in the team competition at the London Prepares fencing test event.
